Christina Gao was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her father was a junior national badminton champion in China. She has a younger sister.
Christina has moved to Toronto, Canada, and trains with 1984 and 1988 Olympic silver medalist Brian Orser. Orser was also the coach that trained 2010 Winter Olympic Champion, Kim Yu-na.
